West Germany's Destiny

Abstract

West Germany is essential to the stability and defense of Western Europe. Conversely, the various multilateral alliances which include West Germany are essential to its future. The militant nationalism emerging in Eastern Europe offers a possible entree for West Germany to assist in their economic development and to improve its image among the satellite countries. The soundest policy for West Germany to pursue at this time is to continue its alliances with the rest of Western Europe and the United States while increasing its efforts to gradually improve its economic and cultural relations with selected Eastern European countries. This will demand patience and preseverance for the West German leaders and people. It can be accomplished if they continue to display the mature, stable attitudes during the next ten years that have been shown during the past ten years.
