Citizens' Report Summary of Performance and Financial Results, Fiscal Year 2008

Abstract

The Department of Defense is the largest and most complex institution in the Federal government. It also has the largest budget and the accompanying responsibility to properly manage those funds. This report is a brief look at how the Department's fiscal affairs were managed in the past year. It is a summary of two more lengthy documents: the Agency Financial Report that was issued on November 17, 2008 and the Annual Performance Report that will be released January 15, 2009. Together, these documents provide a comprehensive picture of the Department's ongoing efforts to ensure the effective use and full accountability of taxpayer resources. For your convenience, conclusions cited in both reports are contained in this shorter report. The report includes a description of the Fiscal Year 2008 enterprise-level performance goals and progress on several strategic goals: fighting terrorism, reorienting capabilities and forces for the 21st century, and achieving unity of effort. Also included is a brief summary of the Department's latest progress towards achieving government-wide objectives cited as part of the President's Management Agenda.
