Novel Elastomeric Closed Cell Foam - Nonwoven Fabric Composite Material (Phase III)

Abstract

The objective of the effort is to further develop novel closed cell foam-nonwoven fabric composites to commercial scale evaluation. Armacell tasks focused on foam optimization for commercial production, adhesive bonding of foam to fabric and commercial scale-up to produce fabric-like foam 0.10-0.12 inches thick in widths to 60-inches. Self extinguishing, insulating closed cell foam was successfully produced to 60 inch width and furnished in sufficient quantity to produce composites for the target shelter assembly prototypes. This work represents a portion of a broad team effort between AFRL, North Carolina State University, Freudenberg Nonwovens and Haartz Corporation.
