MOUT: Military Operations in Urban Terrain (Air Land Sea Bulletin, Issue No. 2008-1, January 2008)
Abstract
This issue of the Air Land Sea Bulletin (ALSB) focuses on military operations in urban terrain (MOUT). The first article describes the Joint Effects Training (JET) model employed at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California, to better prepare Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs) for deployment. The next article, "The Armor Effect: The Surprising Utility of Armored Forces in Urban and Irregular Warfare," is a reminder of the historical importance of armor in urban operations. In the third article, "Armed Overwatch: Key to Successful COIN Operations in Urban Terrain," the author introduces the term "armed overwatch," comparing it to the Army's concept of overwatch as it was practiced by General William DePuy's ground forces in World War II. The term describes the employment of airpower in close quarters for urban operations. The fourth article, "Benefits and Challenges of Integrated Live Fire in MOUT Training -- Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC)," highlights the benefits and challenges of integrating aircraft and indirect live fires with MOUT training. In the fifth article, "New MOUT Tactics: Mirror-based Sighting Devices for Small Arms," the author adds to the military services' deployment certification with academics on new mirror-based sighting devices for small arms and the tactics needed to employ them. In the final article, "Battlefield Innovation and Brave Leadership: Retaining Control of the Night," the author reminds us that battlefield innovation requires courageous leadership. He presents an idea to help increase the military services' combat effectiveness in MOUT, or any operation.
