The US-China Defense Relationship

Abstract

The US decision in 1980 to establish a defense relationship with the People's Republic of China was clearly influenced by balance-of-power theory. In the 1970's the Soviet Union's buildup of military forces and her increasingly aggressive foreign policy suggested intentions that went beyond the more defense of her own borders. In response, the United States and China recognized the desirability of a political demarche that would provide for some form of security cooperation to balance the Soviet threat.
