Prototype Narrative Approaches to Command and Control Technology

Abstract

This report results from a contract tasking University of Abertay Dundee as follows: The Grantee was supposed to investigate the cognitive processes of commanders and their staff with the intention of developing more effective technological support via agent-based technology. This work was explicitly designed as expansion to contract FA8655-03-1-3052, which defined the cognitive dimensions of command and control and their relationship to different decision making contexts. It will make use of the product of that research, an analysis of conceptual structures explicitly and implicitly used by commanders in making battlespace decisions during planning development and execution. The aims of this project are to develop a working prototype of a narrative interface to access a simulated database of information and determine its utility for six specific tasks: developing a shared mental model, enhancing individual situational awareness, improving decision making quality, reducing groupthink and erroneous decision making, communicating command intent, and working with software agents as tools. The grant was terminated for noncompliance by the PI.
