Owning the Night

Abstract

This article discusses a model known as the Sleep, Activity, Fatigue and Task Effectiveness (SAFTE) model, which integrates quantitative information about: (1) circadian rhythms in metabolic rate; (20 cognitive performance decay rates associated with wakefulness; and (3) cognitive performance effects associated with sleep inertia to produce a model of human cognitive effectiveness. The model has been under development by the DoD for more than a decade.
