Naval District Washington -- Anacostia Annex Building Survey
Abstract
This study undertook an architectural survey of Anacostia Annex, which is part of Naval District Washington, to determine if Anacostia Annex is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a historic district, and also to determine if any buildings are individually eligible for the NRHP. This report contains a survey of 15 buildings located at Anacostia Annex constructed by the Navy between 1920 and 1949. Naval District Washington provided a list of all buildings located at Anacostia Annex to the survey team. This work determined that only Buildings 168 and 169 are individually eligible for the NRHP. The removal of the former Naval Air Station runways, removal of the World War I era former Bolling Army Air Corps buildings, and integrity changes to the control tower (Building 92) have made Anacostia Annex ineligible as a historic district to the NRHP. Except for Buildings 168 and 169, the buildings comprising the Anacostia Annex are not significant enough in their own right to be individually eligible to the NRHP. The study also determined that no buildings meet the requirements for Cold War exceptional importance under criteria consideration "g." The survey satisfies Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended, and was used to determine the eligibility of these buildings for inclusion on the NRHP. The appendix contains the building inventory forms that were filled out for each of the 15 buildings surveyed.
