Information Security: Federal Guidance Needed to Address Control Issues With Implementing Cloud Computing
Abstract
Cloud computing is an emerging form of computing that relies on Internet based services and resources to provide computing services to customers, while freeing them from the burden and costs of maintaining the underlying infrastructure. Examples of cloud computing include Web based e-mail applications and common business applications that are accessed online through a browser, instead of through a local computer. The President's budget has identified the adoption of cloud computing in the federal government as a way to more efficiently use the billions of dollars spent annually on IT. As part of the 2011 budget, the administration plans to deploy cloud computing in a series of pilot projects across the government. According to the President's budget, these pilots could potentially lead to significant savings in federal IT spending. However, along with the potential benefits of using cloud computing come the potential risks and challenges of adopting a new model for delivering IT services.
