Battle Damage Assessment: The Ground Truth

Abstract

Since the dawn of organized combat, assessing the effects of actions against enemies has played a key role in the prosecution and outcome of battles, campaigns, and ultimately wars. Early assessments were simple because battles were confined in space and time, so a commander could observe all developments as they occurred. As combat became more complex, especially with the increased use of joint and combined forces, assessing battle damage became correspondingly more complicated.
