Concepts and Applications of Water Transport Time Scales for Coastal Inlet Systems

Abstract

This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) reviews concepts describing water transport time scales ? flushing time, age, and residence time ? and illustrates their use for coastal applications. As an example, a methodology to estimate residence time is presented for a constructed wetland cell in Chesapeake Bay, MD with the output of the Coastal Modeling System (CMS) and the CMS-driven Particle Tracking Model (PTM).
