Projectile Velocity Estimation Using Aerodynamics and Accelerometer Measurements: A Kalman Filter Approach

Abstract

A three state Kalman filter was developed to estimate the airspeed of a projectile given only measurements of its axial acceleration, along with a priori knowledge of the axial force coefficient of the projectile. The nonlinear hybrid filter was developed, tested, and tuned using simulated data and its performance on flight data was evaluated.
