Mitigative Features for Explosive Containment on the Chemical Stockpile Disposal Program

Abstract

Public Law 99-145 mandated that the Army dispose of the Unites States inventory of obsolete and deteriorating chemical weapons in the safest and most environmentally acceptable manner. The Chemical Stockpile Disposal Program (CSDP) was created by the Department of Defense (DOD) to accomplish this mission. The CSDP encompasses reconfiguration, transportation, disassembly, and incineration of deteriorated chemical munitions utilizing state-of-the-art facilities and techniques. The disposal of these munitions must be accomplished in strict accordance with all current environmental regulations and under vast public scrutiny. The CSDP has implemented many mitigative measures in order to increase safety and to alleviate public concern in the event of an accidental detonation within these facilities.
