The Employment of Strategic Bombers in a Tactical Role: 1941-1951
Abstract
This monograph reviews the tactical employment of strategic bombers during World War II and the first 18 months of the Korean conflict. Emphasis is placed on the development of employment doctrine both before and during the period 1941-1951 and on the effects of theater conditions on conformity to official doctrine. Following an introductory chapter, Chapter 2, Employment Doctrine: 1918-1951, contains three sections -- The Interbellum Period: 1918-1939; World War II and Korea: 1939-1951; and Strategic and Tactical Targets. Chapter 3, The Mediterranean Theater, contains two sections -- The African Campaign: 2 June 1942-13 May 1943, and The Italian Campaign: 3 September 1942-2 May 1945. Chapter 4 focuses on The European Theater. Chapter 5, The Pacific and Asiatic Theaters, contains six sections -- NOPAC: Eleventh Air Force; CHENPAC: Seventh Air Force; SOPAC and SWPA: Thirteenth Air Force; SWPA: Fifth Air Force; CBI: Tenth and Fourteenth Air Forces; and Twentieth Air Force. Chapter 6, The Korean Conflict: 1950-1951, contains two sections -- Phase I: 25 June-30 September 1950, and Phases II-V: 1 October 1950-31 December 1951. Chapter 7 presents the conclusions.
