Research Foundations for the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative

Abstract

The Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness (OUSD(P&R)) established the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative in 1997 to assist the military Services in making "learning" (education, training, and performance/decision aiding) available on-demand, anytime and anywhere. ADL was intended to capitalize on opportunities provided by research on learning technology. These opportunities suggested that technology could make the benefits of individualized tutoring affordable by reducing the costs and increasing the effectiveness of learning. The empirical research on which these opportunities were based continues to be relevant and is reviewed in this report.
