Worldwide Emerging Environmental Issues Affecting the U.S. Military

Abstract

Germany will join the UN Security Council for two years beginning in January as one of ten non-permanent members. During this time it is expected to urge this UN body to begin addressing climate change as a global security threat. This view is shared by many other UN members, as evidence of the security implications of climate change mount, and environmental security is becoming part of the security agenda of states and international security organizations. The UN General Assembly December 15, 2010 session focused on improving the coordination of efforts in case of disasters, including those associated with natural hazards.
