Intratheater Airlift Functional Area Analysis (FAA)

Abstract

This functional area analysis (FAA) for U.S. Air Force intratheater airlift is the first in a series of documents RAND Project AIR FORCE is producing that together constitute a capabilities-based assessment (CBA) required as part of the Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System (JCIDS). According to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Instruction (CJCSI) 3170.01E, an FAA identifies the operational tasks, conditions, and standards needed to achieve military objectives. Two other elements of the JCIDS process will follow: the functional needs analysis (FNA) and the functional solution analysis (FSA). The research described in this monograph was sponsored by Maj Gen Thomas P. Kane, Director, Plans and Programs, Headquarters, Air Mobility Command (AMC), Scott Air Force Base, Illinois (HQ AMC/A5). The work was conducted within the Force Modernization and Employment Program of RAND Project AIR FORCE as part of a fiscal year 2006 study, "Improving Air-Ground Integration, Interoperability, and Interdependence."
