Abstract

Chemical warfare nerve agents and certain pesticides are organophosphorus compounds (OPs) that potently inhibit cholinesterases (ChEs), in particular acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme that hydrolyzes the cholinergic neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) in the peripheral and central nervous system (CNS) (Taylor 2001).
