Development and Validation of a PTSD-Related Impairment Scale

Abstract

Our goal is to design and validate an inventory to assess multiple dimensions of PTSD-related functional impairment experienced by active duty service members and veterans. A series of focus groups and individual assessments using interviews and self-report questionnaires are being used to understand the multiple domains of functional impairment. Results from the focus groups revealed that the most frequently occurring functional impairments among veterans were in the following domains: intimate relationships, family, parenting, work, education, friendships/social life, and self-care. Utilizing this information, an 87-item inventory was developed. The psychometric properties of this inventory are being tested. By creating and validating an inventory to assess PTSD-related functional impairment we hope to offer a useful tool for clinicians, researchers and military leaders. This measure will have enormous value in identifying individuals with significant levels of impairments across multiple domains and for promoting more efficient allocation of resources.
