Measuring Stress and Ability to Recover from Stress with Salivary Alpha-Amylase Levels

Abstract

In recent years, an increasing number of Soldiers have experienced multiple deployments in combat zones, thus increasing the potential for disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder to occur. In order to better understand the relationship between the stress of combat and well-being, this paper includes a review of the impact of stress on humans, and the impact that resilience has on moderating certain stress-related conditions. The findings suggest that measuring salivary alpha-amylase levels may help to determine a Soldier's resilience or risk of developing PTSD as part of the research efforts associated with the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program.
