Nanotechnology: Societal Implications - Maximizing Benefit for Humanity. Report of the National Nanotechnology Initiative Workshop Held in Arlington, Virginia on 3-5 December 2003
Abstract
This report records and synthesizes the opinions of participants at the National Nanotechnology Initiative Societal Implications workshop, held on December 3-5, 2003, in Arlington, Virginia. Sponsored by the Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee, the workshop was organized to help the NSET identify trends and opportunities in nanoscience and nanotechnology toward maximizing benefit to humanity, while addressing potential risks in technology development. Contributing to workshop discussions were experts from industry, government, and academia, representing a wide range of disciplines, including the social sciences, economics, philosophy, physical and biological sciences, and engineering. Topics ranged from economic implications, ethics, public policy, public interaction, education, and workforce development to quality of life, national security and related issues. While environmental and health impacts were an important part of workshop discussions, more technical aspects, in particular, current research and future research recommendations were not addressed directly.
