Provider Needs for Distributed Simulation Education System in Total Intravenous Anesthesia and Target Controlled Infusion

Abstract

The subject of this project is TIV A (Total Intra-Venous Anesthesia) training via a website to enhance the safety of anesthesia for the war fighter. Based on the military needs for a simpler anesthetic administration system with a smaller footprint, there is a desire in all the services to use TIV A. However, TIV A is not yet widely used in the USA. Due to this unfamiliarity, the purpose of this project was to produce clinically relevant TIV A training on an open web site. The scope of this project included a needs assessment, selection of a minimum set of information needed, preparation of graphics of blood/plasma concentrations of propofol from pharmaco-kinetic simulation programs, selection of a teaching philosophy and format, and finally, building and implementation of a web site with linear and asynchronous Gust-in-time) learning formats.
