Satin Computer Security

Abstract

This paper deals with the computer security aspects of the SAC Automated Total Information Network (SATIN). Threats to communications processors are identified, and historical countermeasures reviewed. The paper examines problems that will arise if security is not an explicit consideration in the design of the SATIN communications processors. Use of segmented memory, multistate processor hardware and a separable software "security kernel" is recommended for all SATIN communications processors. Early implementation and certification of a SATIN BCP prototype are proposed.
