Partnering With Nigeria for a Stable Future: The Importance of a Persistent Presence

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the spread of extremist groups can be curtailed throughout Northern Africa and, more specifically, how to stop Nigeria from becoming another Afghanistan. The thesis will focus on how to motivate the Nigerian government to engage in and develop its population. The thesis will demonstrate that one way to ensure the stability of a weak state is to persistently provide security force assistance to local governments prior to their establishing control over the population through direct tribal engagement.
