The Elastic Instability of Duralumin Columns in Compression

Abstract

The object of this thesis was to apply mathematical formulas based on elastic theory to duralumin columns in an attempt to predict the failing loads in the range below that characterized by Euler failures. The results of the investigation showed that if certain relations in the dimensions of the columns were fulfilled, the theory gave a good approximation to the critical stress.
