Simple Guide to Using GNU AutoTools

Abstract

While working on porting a C based project to use the GNU AutoTools for configuration and compilation we discovered that the guides available online were either outdated or not clear enough for someone unfamiliar with AutoTools. After successfully adding AutoTools to that project and many others, we thought other programmers may benefit from what we learned and the basic starter files that we created that make starting a new project from scratch or adding AutoTools to an existing project a snap. This report is not intended to be an in depth guide to all of the possible features and capabilities AutoTools provides. It is intended to provide the information and basic AutoTool configuration files needed for a typical project.
