Leading Edge. Volume 7, Issue Number 4, 2012

Abstract

The Leading Edge magazine is produced by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren, Virginia. The purpose of the publication is to showcase technical excellence across the Warfare Centers and promote a broader awareness of the breadth and depth of knowledge and support available to the Navy and DoD. In this issue of The Leading Edge magazine, you will trace the rich history of directed-energy work at Dahlgren, gain insight into directed-energy weapons already fielded or being readied for the field, and learn about prototypes that show real promise for providing incredibly effective offensive and defensive directed-energy solutions. For example, scientists and engineers at NSWCDD are leading the way toward realizing small, lightweight radio frequency (RF) transmitters using high-power, solid-state switching amplifiers for the development of counter-improvised explosive device detection and neutralization systems. You will also learn about diverse applications of directed-energy technology such as research and testing of laser glare devices and laser eye protection and have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition framework and the challenge of maintaining cost and schedule estimates while delivering weapons systems that are critical to the warfighter.
