Net Zero Plus JCTD Results: Evaluation of Energy Saving Technologies for Expeditionary Shelters
Abstract
The overall objective of Net Zero Plus JCTD is to determine the best combination of advanced shading, insulation, and lighting systems for the most energy efficient shelter. Optimized technologies include Solar Barrier systems, High Efficiency Lighting Systems, and Advanced Insulation. The joint demonstration includes shelters and technologies from the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps. All of the branches are collecting and sharing data from the demonstration. The goals of this evaluation, which was carried out at the LSA Warrior Site, were as follows: compare baseline energy usage to energy efficient technologies, evaluate various configurations for optimization, and document the results in a comparative and comprehensive report. The energy efficient technologies evaluated were as follows: Solar Barrier Systems, including the Ultra Lightweight Camouflage Net System (ULCANS), Advanced Solar Shades, and Power Shade (including Photovoltaic Panels (2kW); Lighting Systems, including Fluorescent Lights, Light Emitting Diodes (Three Sets), and Electroluminescent Panels; and Advanced Insulation, including Aerogel Liner, TEMPER Insulated Liner, Gas Filled Panel Insulation, Laminated Liner, Radiant Barrier, Quilted Liner, Honeycomb Insulation, and an Airbeam Insulated Liner. Other Net Zero Plus technologies include Pyrolysis Solid Waste Disposal, Solar-Powered Advanced Refrigerated TriCons (SPARTs), Electronic Power Control Conditioning Module (EPCC), Micro-grid Systems, Exterior Spray Foam for tents and buildings, and DREAM.
