Unity in Diversity: An Indonesian Vision of International Relations

Abstract

Indonesia is the fourth most populous nation in the world after China, India, and the United States of America, with roughly 240 million people. It also is the third largest democracy and home to more practicing Muslims than any other nation on the globe. Its geostrategic location and abundant natural and human resources make her an engine for economic prosperity. Indonesia prides herself on her "Unity in diversity," which is her national motto. Indonesia recognizes the identities and differences of all her people, all living peacefully and with a common, national purpose. Indonesia has a different view of international relations than is prevalent in the West, and it has demonstrated this view through its leadership and participation in the international movement of non-aligned nations for over 50 years. Indonesia views the world through the lens of peace, prosperity, and friendship. It is a view that is common among nation-states that are not global powers. Indonesia practices, and offers to the world, a vision of peace, prosperity, and friendship that is an alternative to the pessimistic cycle of war and violence that has plagued mankind throughout time.
