Another Challenge for Africa: Ethnic Stability

Abstract

Ethnicity is a very personal matter to the African people. Ethnicity also is a key foundational challenge that Africans must address. Ethnicity can combine with factors of instability, such as poverty, disease, corruption, poor governance, and weak institutions to stunt the forward progress of African governments in tackling these challenges. This paper examines the role that ethnicity plays in African social structures and in formal African governance. The paper will recommend ways in which the United States can help to mitigate the unrest, instability, and conflict associated with ethnicity and ethnic intolerance in Africa to strengthen regional stability in support of U.S. national interests.
