Equipping the Force

Abstract

The Department of Defense (DoD) has procured over $1.1 trillion worth of equipment over the past 10 years in support of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, budget constraints of 2012 present the DoD with a potential budget reduction of $1 trillion over the next 10 years. Funding the sustainment of equipment already purchased will present challenges at the strategic level. Additionally, there are lessons to be learned on the requirements development process and the acquisition cycle that can be applied to ensure that the U.S. military enters future combat with the greatest technological edge feasible.
