Preparing for the Future Operational Environment

Abstract

Now that the United States and its Armed Forces have transitioned out of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and will soon transition out of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), training development has moved to the top of the military's agenda. The transition to a training-centric military entails preparation for emerging threats, a changing environment, and changing requirements. How did the military conduct post-war training in the past, and what should be the focus of training going forward? Will training methodology and training structure require changes to adapt to the future volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment? The application of lessons learned in Iraq and Afghanistan will shape how the military trains and develops leaders and Soldiers to understand, embrace, and excel in future environments. Identifying the right training requirements will affect the Operational Force at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels.
