Assessment of Ukranian National Defense Policy

Abstract

This Strategy Research Project (SRP) examines current Ukrainian defense policy in light of changes in domestic and foreign policy made by newly-elected President Victor Yanukovych in the period 2010-2011. A short historical review provides background on the development of contemporary Ukrainian defense policy from Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 to the present day. An analysis of current Ukrainian defense policy assesses the effectiveness of its implementation and its advantages, shortfalls, and potential risks. The SRP also contains suggestions for the Ukrainian government regarding missions, actions, and resource allocation of the Ukranian Armed Forces; defense industry reformation; and international military cooperation.
