Application of Two-Sided Matching to Internal Labor of the Hellenic Navy

Abstract

The assignment process in an organization of any nature (e.g., military) plays a crucial role in the level of efficiency and effectiveness achieved by that organization. A well-designed assignment process is a handy tool for decision makers who are charged with fulfilling the organization's goals. This thesis explores the application of two-sided matching theory to the Hellenic Navy's assignment process. Three mechanisms (Priority Mechanism, Deferred Acceptance mechanism, and Top Trading Cycle Mechanism) are chosen and developed, taking into account the magnitude of specific attributes like officers' past performance, educational level, experience, assignment preferences, and position requirements/priorities to achieve the most effective matching between officers and positions. Three scoring methods based on mathematical formulas and statistical parameters are used to evaluate the three two-sided matching mechanisms. The results are compared and recommendations are set forth to enable the matching theory to be suitably applied to the Hellenic Navy's assignment process.
