Understanding the Knowledge Environment
Abstract
Knowledge and other intangibles such as leadership and experience are valuable commodities to the Army and a driving force behind the emerging human capital strategy initiatives. In a 1994 Fortune Magazine article, Tom Stewart warned companies to focus less on what they own and more on what they know: their intellectual capital. Since then, Peter Drucker, among others, has identified knowledge as the new basis of competition in post-capitalist society, and Stanford economist Paul Romer has called knowledge the only unlimited resource. In the mid-90s, the term knowledge management was used to address the shortcomings of information technology to deliver on the promise of improved effectiveness and increased efficiency.
