Development and Validation of a Short Measure of Hardiness

Abstract

This study investigated the psychometric properties of a measure of hardiness designed for military applications. Our findings showed fairly strong support for most of the scale properties we investigated. The confirmatory factor analyses supported the hypothesized 6-factor structure for the scale and the reliability analyses established the acceptable internal consistency levels of the scales. Hardiness refers to the characteristic ways people interpret potentially stressful events. The Soldier Adaptation Model (SAM) is a theoretical framework describing the key stages of the stress response process.
