Biodiesel: Paving the Way for DoD's Renewable Future

Abstract

Demonstration of Biodiesel Blend Use in Ground Tactical Vehicles and Equipment (non-deployed). The objective is to demonstrate and validate the use of B20 in nondeployed ground tactical vehicles and equipment by addressing users concerns regarding the following: (1) Stability of the biodiesel, (2) Accelerated deterioration during high-temperature storage, (3) Vehicle operation and fuel properties in low temperatures, (4) Water affinity and microbial degradation, and (5) Material compatibility and solvency. The Tri-Service Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricant Working Group demonstrated biodiesel blend (B20) in non-deployed tactical vehicles and equipment for various operational schedules and climate conditions to address user concerns. Demonstration Sites: Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Crane, IN (Hot/Cold, Humid); 29 Palms, CA (Hot, Dry); Moody AFB, GA (Hot, Humid Climate), Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC), CA (Mild Climate); and Marine Corps Base Hawaii (Hot, Humid Climate).
