MURI: Adaptive Waveform Design for Full Spectral Dominance

Abstract

In this project, we developed methods for adaptive design of signals transmitted by radar or communication systems. The proposed methods optimize the performance in the presence of time-varying environmental conditions and, in the case of radar, respond to unknown parameters of static and dynamic targets. We devised algorithms that exploit the waveform diversities in multiple dimensions, such as time, space, frequency, phase, power, and polarization. We demonstrated thorough analysis and numerical examples that our proposed methods provide dramatically improved performance over existing systems. We considered various aspects, including waveform design, environment modeling, algorithms for target detection and tracking, waveform adaptivity in communications, compressive sensing and through-the-wall radar. Our contributions reflect the multidisciplinary subjects of the project and composition of our team of experts in mathematics, statistics, engineering, and physics.
