Assessment of the Applicability of ANSI S12.42-2010 as a General Measure of Protection from Impulsive Noise by Measurement of Impulsive and Continuous Noise Insertion Loss of the HGU-56/P and the CEP

Abstract

Impulse and continuous noise insertion loss measurements of the communication ear plug (CEP) and HGU-56/P flight helmet were performed in accordance with ANSI S12.42-2010 using a GRAS 45CB acoustic test fixture (ATF). Continuous noise insertion loss measurements were corrected for comparison to real ear attenuation at threshold (REAT) measurements. Results indicate that the hearing protection devices performed better in the ATF than on a human ear. Comments on the applicability and utility of the ANSI standard as a measure of protection are presented, along with recommendations for further development.
