Novel Optical Metamaterials and Approaches for Fabrication

Abstract

Techniques for the fabrication of novel optical metamaterials using chemical and biological self-assembly were investigated based on a recently developed material design. The design is for a low-loss and isotropic negative index metamaterial (NIM) for the visible regime based on silicon carbide (SiC) spherical nanoparticles embedded inside of a magnesium diboride (MgB2) host. This work offers a solid technical foundation for the continued investigation of metamaterial fabrication using both chemical and biological self-assembly.
