Laserfest February Kick-Off Program

Abstract

Regarding FA9550-10-1-0161; "LASERFEST FEBRUARY KICK-OFF PROGRAM", OSA received a grant in the amount of $25,000 to support our Laserfest program, a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the laser. The money was designated to be used as follows, "travel support of eminent scientists, Nobel Laureates, special guests and other honorees to attend this important event and other miscellaneous program expenses related to this meeting." The bulk of this grant money ($15,000) was used to support direct costs of the February kick-off event held at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History on February 12, 2010. The event honored those who have made significant contributions to the development and application of laser technology. Honored individuals included researchers who developed the concept of the laser, demonstrated some of the first early lasers or received Nobel Prizes and other accolades for their work with lasers. In addition to honoring these researchers and scientists, the event served to educate the public about the importance of the laser. The additional $10,000 was used to cover direct costs of special Laserfest programming at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) and Frontiers in Optics (FiO).
