Success Stories in Applied Research

Abstract

These briefing charts describe the basics of two applied research programs: the Base Defense Operations Center (BDOC) Trainer and the Virtual Interactive Criminal Investigator Trainer (VICIT). A chart describing the BDOC Trainer system includes the types of software used in the system, software descriptions, number of each type of software unit, type of hardware the software runs on, operating system for each software type, and which software types use a dual monitor. The VICIT is a voice-activated, virtual simulation-based interactive full-body avatar-based trainer with all the necessary software for motion, appearance, speech recognition, and avatar conversation/emotional response; split-screen live/virtual After-Action playback capability; one set of integrated hardware with third party software licenses; and one branched logic training scenario (rape case) that includes subject, victim, and witness training vignettes. VICIT provides immersive training for military Criminal Investigator students in the art of interrogation and interview techniques without resorting to role-playing. VICIT fills a Force Protection Training capability gap.
