Study of an Alternative Career Path for Deck Officers in the Hellenic Navy

Abstract

Since the first days of the Hellenic Navy, deck officers have come from the Hellenic Naval Academy (HNA). Currently, all the deck officers, after graduation from the HNA, follow a direct but simple course of advancement. At each rank, deck officers must successfully fulfill certain career assignments (known as milestones) to continue on their career path in the HN. The present research seeks to determine if a second career path could be created to operate in tandem with the existing one. By introducing a second, parallel path, the HN would have greater flexibility in how it uses its deck officers. Additionally, a second career path might benefit officers who have special skills, allowing them to progress through the ranks based on different criteria, such as technical expertise. The net result could help to lower the Navy's operating costs during a time of economic uncertainty in Greece.
