Final Oahe Dam/Lake Oahe Master Plan Missouri River, South Dakota and North Dakota
Abstract
The Oahe project was authorized for flood control, navigation, hydropower, fish and wildlife, recreation, irrigation, municipal and industrial water supply, and water quality. This updated master plan guides the use and development of the natural and manmade resources of the project. It affirms land classifications and management practices similar to those already in effect. It also provides for recreational opportunities while maintaining the integrity of the natural resources. The master plan outlines development needs, analyzes special problems, and provides guidance on public use, water quality, natural areas, and historic properties within U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) boundaries. The Corps is the steward of the lands and waters at its water resources projects. Its natural resources management mission is to manage, conserve, and enhance these natural resources and the environment while providing quality public outdoor recreation experiences to serve the needs of present and future generations. In all aspects of natural and cultural resource management, Corps managers promote awareness of environmental values and adhere to sound environmental stewardship, protection, compliance, and restoration practices. The master plan provides for stewardship of natural resources and manages for long-term public access to, and use of, the natural resources. The Corps conserves natural resources and provides recreation opportunities that contribute to the quality of American life. The planning process is conducted in cooperation with other Federal, State, Tribal, and local governmental agencies, as well as the private sector. The land classifications and management guidelines contained in this master plan reflect the potentials of the natural resources of the area and the identified population and visitation patterns.
