Ramjets: Thermal Management an Integrated Engineering Approach

Abstract

Within the framework of the VKI/RTO Lecture Series on High Speed Propulsion: Engine Design Integration and Thermal Management , this lecture focuses on thermal management of ramjet propulsion systems. This is done by describing an engineering model that can be used to perform an integrated thermal analysis of a supersonic/hypersonic ramjet propelled vehicle in conjunction with an integrated performance evaluation of the aerodynamic and propulsive performance of the vehicle. The thermal analysis considers the combined thermal loading from aerodynamic heating on the outer surfaces of the vehicle and from internal reactive gas dynamic heating inside the propulsion system. Especially for highly integrated high-speed air breathing propelled vehicles the resulting tool is very valuable to support the vehicle design process in its early stage.
