New Media: The Key to Influence in Irregular Warfare

Abstract

The rate at which the "New Media" global phenomenon is erupting is important to Special Operations Forces because most aspects of irregular warfare involve a focus on populations and the ways in which they are influenced, either as the enemy's Center of Gravity (COG) or friendly forces' COG. By "New Media," the author means the integration of social media and mobile technology. Special Operations Forces must understand the change in the definition of "population" that has been brought about by New Media, and must develop the tools they need to influence foreign populations. This paper focuses on the need for Special Operations Forces to incorporate New Media into their operations when conducting the missions of counterterrorism, unconventional warfare, and Foreign Internal Defense.
