Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report. Air Tactics Against NVN Air/Ground Defenses

Abstract

The following report records the dynamic development of air tactics against the progressively formidable NVN air and ground defenses during the period 5 August 1964 (Gulf of Tonkin Incident) to November 1966. Previously, this air action has been recorded under the title of ROLLING THUNDER, which had been intended as a continuing report. Due to the multi-faceted nature of air operations in the Southeast Asian area, the CHECO reports lend themselves best to specific studies within the broad operational concepts of area reports such as ROLLING THUNDER, TALLY HO, STEEL TIGER, etc., hence the change of title. The monthly analysis of ROLLING THUNDER operations will continue to be reported in Summary Air Operations Southeast Asia, published by this Directorate. As a record of events and occurrences leading to the current tactical situation, it is hoped this report will contribute significantly to an understanding and appreciation of the tasks faced by combat aircrews over North Vietnam as well as to give the reader a narrative basis for evaluation of these operations. iv
