Water Security: What Else Can We Do?

Abstract

Water is a strategic resource with projected future shortages and increased consumption due to world population growth, which will affect security around the globe and threaten the United States' interests in many regions. Water is fundamental to human life and vital for food production, sanitation, economic development and opportunity, human health, trade power generation, environmental sustainability, recreation, and stability and security. Because it is tied to so many sectors, water scarcity and projected declining per capita quantities of this vital resource challenges the governments of developing countries around the world as political leaders struggle to fulfill the basic needs of their growing populations. The United States, its partners, and other global leaders must continue to focus on managing water scarcity challenges to increase world security and stability. The United States can do more with better interagency cooperation. A "whole-of-government" approach to the problem will help to prevent future conflicts and protect vital U.S. interests.
