Accuracy of Calories Indicated on 7 Commercially Available Exercise Machines

Abstract

The Navy uses commercially available bikes and elliptical training devices as cardiovascular testing alternatives to the run portion of the physical readiness test. Prior to approving specific devices for use, the device indicated calories are tested for accuracy. This report discusses the findings for 7 commercially available devices. 52 subjects were recruited to test the devices. Subjects exercised at 3 specific work settings on each device for 12 minutes each. Calories expended were measured using a Parvomedics True One metabolic cart. The last 6 minutes of data was used to compare calories indicated on the device to calories measured on the metabolic cart. Two of the 7 devices met the Navy's approval criteria.
