Leadership Theory Taught in Air Force Distant Learning Programs

Abstract

Through analysis of leadership, management, theories of leadership, and Air Force leadership curriculum taught in distant learning officer courses, I define the prevalent leadership theories that underpin the development of our officer force. These leadership theories form the base of our leader training and drive future leader behavior. Aspects of leadership and management will be contrasted. Additionally, trait and situational leadership theories will be explained to provide a common reference for established theories. Finally, the distant learning leadership curriculums for Air Force Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College will be reviewed. Recommendations will be made for course curriculum improvement. Scholarly, peer-reviewed articles and studies are utilized in this review.
